FAQ's About Laser Hair Reduction

Why use the Alexandrite Laser?

Like the chevy commercials of old saying Tried, Tested and True, so is the mantra of Alexandrite laser’s. This laser has been in use by the military since the 1960’s and for over 16 years, since the FDA approved laser hair removal with the Alexandrite laser. The Alexendrite laser is know for its effective use on finer and thinner hairs when compared to other lasers; proving its capability and outstanding performance. This laser will give you the results, the efficacy and the safety .

The National Institute of Health, completed a study on Alexandrite lasers in 2001 and found that these laser’s perform “safely and effectively achieve long-term hair removal in patients with skin types I-V.”

How Does Laser Hair Reduction Work?

The laser emits a very specific beam of light at a wavelength that is targeted at melanin in the hair and/or at the follicle growth center (called the hair bulb). Melanin is the material that gives color to our hair and skin. The laser beam passes through the skin and is absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicle.

Therefore, the ideal candidate for this procedure has hair that is darker than their skin color. If the skin and hair color are too similar, it confuses some lasers.

Our laser services are not effective for white or grey hairs, as the hair follicle is no longer producing melanin. For shades of red this treatment may not be as effective for you.

Why do I Need a Series of Laser Treatments?

At any given time, a certain percentage of hairs are in the “resting” phase, rather than a growth phase. The laser will not be effective on those resting hairs, which is why, on average 6-8 treatments are necessary in each area to achieve maximum results.

More treatments can be done as soon as further hair growth appears. Due to the variation in the number of hairs in the resting phase, certain parts of the body will respond more rapidly whereas others might take much longer to show effects. For example, the face usually responds more slowly than the bikini line, due to faster hair cycles.

For wrinkle treatments, pigmented lesions and vascular a series of 3-5 treatments will be needed in order to achieve the desired results. This is so the body can send in the appropriate cells and make the right adjustments. When treating pigmented lesions, know that after each treatment the age spots will appear darker, before they fade away.

Does Laser Hair Reduction Hurt?

Laser hair reduction has been described as tiny elastic bands hitting the skin. With the Gentle Lase Pro, there is almost an immediate sense of relief, as we have the Dynamic Cooling Device. This handheld device sprays the upper layers of the skin and cools before and after each pulse.

How do I Prepare for Laser Hair Reduction Treatments?

Pre-treatment Care:
4-6 weeks prior to your first and subsequent laser treatments, tanning and any use of self-tanning creams and sprays will need to cease. During the course of treatment(s) please use at least an SPF 30 level sunscreen for any sun exposure. Effective treatments occur when the hair is in the follicle. Waxing, threading, bleaching or using depilatory agents must be stopped 4 weeks prior to your appointment. Shaving or clipping is completely acceptable to do. For facial hair, please cease using the above hair reduction treatments at least 2 weeks prior to the appointment.

Day Before:
Shave the area to be treated on, using a new razor!

Day Of:
On the day of your appointment, remove all lotions, make-up (for facial appointments) and deodorant. Before and after pictures will be taken, so that the visual and effective results are seen.

Post Treatment Care:
After your appointment the treated area will have a mild redness the equivalent of a sunburn. This redness can last up to 2-3 days. Treat your skin like you would if you had received a mild sunburn, you can ice the treated area, put on Aloe etc. It is highly recommended you avoid sun exposure until the redness dissipates. Always use at least an SPF of 30 or higher on the treated area as UV rays come through the clouds as well. Never pick at or scratch the treated skin area. Wait to exfoliate the treated area until day 4 after your appointments. Expect to see the treated hair area to shed, within 5-20 days. This may appear to look like the hair is growing, but we assure it is not.

Expectations:
After a treatment regime up to 80% reduction in hair growth will be noticed. Laser is not suitable for white or grey hairs, as the laser targets melanin. Some red hairs will not achieve desired results.

Some clients may need a yearly maintenance on the treated area, this is completely normal.
